La Maison d’Ulysse: True Terroir
/Small independent luxury hotel La Maison d’Ulysse is ideally positioned in a location where vines that have been cultivated since Roman times cover the landscape as far as the eye can see, punctuated by olive groves and lavender fields.
With some of the country’s finest crus on its doorstep, the boutique hotel’s charming founders have put together a bespoke tour of the region’s vineyards and estates for wine aficionados to discover the rich and varied terroirs.
Escorted by Florian, a knowledgeable local guide, the first stop of this sophisticated ‘vineyard crawl’ is at the Cressance winery next to the hotel, and whose wines are found on the hotel’s carefully-selected wine list. Here, devoted wine producer and dear friend of the hotel, Claude, will welcome guests to sample some of his organic wines and stroll through his sun-drenched vineyards.
Further afield lies Duché d’Uzès, which is a member of the upper crust of the wine world with AOC status. The wines are made using the Grenache, Syrah and Carignan grape variety and the expert winemakers will be on hand to provide insight into the history and production while visitors samples the full-bodied wines for a complete wine tasting experience.
Another prestigious terroir, Côtes du Rhône, is an unmissable stop on a wine enthusiasts bucket list. The villages that make up this region proudly display their famed soils that produce some of the world’s favourite wines. Each vineyard has its own story and heritage, where visitors can discover the wines of both small producers and well-established winemakers. A day leisurely exploring these celebrated vineyards and estates will leave guests with a new understanding of the French world of wine.
